“Thank you for seeing me, Mr. Turner.”
Benjamin Coleridge Turner II, Cole to those mortals who knew him, looked up from his desk. As assistant district attorney, ADA for short, Cole saw a lot of people. The young woman in front of him was no different. “How can I help you, Miss Redmond?”
Meria Redmond lifted her eyes to the ceiling as if drawing strength.
Wrong direction, lady, if you want help from me, Cole thought ironically. As a cover this job did leave something to be desired. Still, he’d loose it if he didn’t at least attempt to assist her, so he tried, again. “Why don’t you tell me what brings you here, Miss Redmond?”
Meria nodded. “I suppose I should start with my father. He died when I was about four, just after my birthday in fact.”
Strangely that was all it took to truly get Cole’s attention. And it just got stranger from there as she went on to explain that she had witnessed her father’s death and believed it to be murder perpetrated by her mother. Being a child of four, her story hadn’t even been heard and she continued to live with her mother.
After several years her mother had remarried to a man Meria had genuinely liked. A few weeks ago, her stepfather had died under mysterious circumstances and though no one believed her, she thought her mother responsible.
“You want me to investigate,” Cole asked, a strange feeling of familiarity hitting him in her story.
A knock on his office door stopped his thought process and Meria’s response. He saw his secretary, Loren Nilsson, outside the door. He beckoned her in with his hand and she opened the door. “Yes, Loren.”
“Your presence is required, sir,” Loren informed him.
Something told him it wasn’t the district attorney, Matt Rogan, who wanted his attention. “I’m with a client. Can it wait while I finish up with her.”
“Now would be better, sir,” Loren informed him, nervousness in her voice.
Cole nodded. He looked back at Meria. “If you will excuse me. Loren will set up another time for us to discuss this in more detail.”
Meria nodded. “That will be fine.” At least he’s listening, she thought as she stood.
Knowing those who sought him where not patient, Cole stood and hurried out of the room. Once he was out of sight, he shimmered out, reappearing within a circle of three cloaked beings, three powerful demons called the Triad.
